E.P. Carrillo Cardinal 54 Cigar Review

This 6×54 stick features a dark tan wrapper with a soft slightly oily feel, lumpy spongy pack, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, triple cap and faint nutty aroma. First light reveals a very loose draw with plentiful medium-full bodied smoke of an oily hay and earth with a long oily finish of the same. The first third burns and performs perfectly with plumes of thick medium-full bodied smoke giving draw flavors of a slightly sweet, creamy wood and earth with a good bit of pepper that lasts through the long finish. Hitting the 1/2 way point at 40 minutes the same great performance and flavors continue. Ending at 1:10 where I couldn’t take it any more, the last third pours on the strength making me dizzy and sweat! Thank you to Larry Rothfork for sending this one in for review, I greatly appreciate it!

I have gotta look for that. I like that it builds to the end. Excellent!

  • Jason Isbaner

Looks good. Nice touch with the mama Mia ! Good times

  • Jellybean

there was a guy in my local cigar shop he said the cigar he was smoking was his first cigar. i noticed he put it out about 15 minutes in. he said he was startin to feel kinda sick, i think he was inhaling tho

Full strength sticks are a bummer when you come across them. They are like instant hangovers, no bueno.

  • TimB

Hang in there!Never thought these had any strength..guess I was wrong.Have to try these bad boys.

  • AngSolo

I truly hate that jittery sweating feeling, however I tend to enjoy the full strength cigars better. Now if they can make them taste the same with less nicotine….that would be something. I’ve tried smoking what are usually described as mild but they usually don’t have much flavor. I’m guessing it’s not something you can build a tolerance to. Oh well what can ya do?

  • rgorman

Someone was kind enough to send me a Carillo today but I have to let it sit in the humi for a while before I try it!

  • ParadiseCove

Bryan..sooo sorry about the strength ramp up. The rave reviews caused me to send it to you, but if I had paid more attention, I probably would have seen reference to it’s strength..be that as it may..I have some in my humi and will have to compare notes with you and watch for the buzz..which I also do not enjoy..not one little bit…whew!!

    • JJO

Hey man, you can’t help it if Bryan’s a weenie. 😉 When he said “Okay”, I knew what was coming, lol. I’ve been wanting to get hold of some of the Maduros to try out.

  • rockjock

Informative and funny. Although I don’t smoke everyday; I have only had two cigars actually make me feel lightheaded and buzzed. Guess I am just different.

    • rockjock

Well, just happened to be in a Cigar Lounge in NOVA and they had these on the shelf. So, of course I had to try one after your review. Very flavorful and lots of great smoke. I will keep an eye out for a box of these.

  • geekfish

I have to say my experience with this one was similar to Bryan’s. I smoked one of these a while ago at a B&M based on several great reviews. I liked the flavor and texture, but the last third really sneaks up on you. I was sweating, jittery, and felt bad driving home.

I tend to find this ramp up in strength at the end in the sticks of EP carrillo I have smoked. His short runs have this at the end too, thought not as severe.

  • rgmenke

Carrillo makes some great sticks. I’ve smoked original natural and didn’t get that much strength. I have three of these waiting to go and almost sent this in review, but I think you’ve had enough;-)

  • Dirk

I have a friend that told me he loves these sticks. Curiously I gave him a Core.. Toro and he turned green and couldn’t take it.. I can assure you if Bryan says they are too potent for him. I will be avoiding them. Thanks for the warning Bryan.. saved me a couple hours of agony.

  • BCamara

Lol nice review Bryan, now go lie down. The flavors seem nice and I don’t mind a little buzz, but not when it makes me jittery. How long have you aged that EP? Any thoughts on the strength mellowing out after some time in the humi?

  • joelala

Might be a stupid question… When the strength first starts coming in, can you taste it at all? I always start feeling the strength when it is way too late. Any advice?

  • ptyler

I had one of those and really enjoyed it…don’t remember the strength being that intense…as I am kinda like you in that I am a bit of a lightweight when it comes to nicotine kick/buzz. Good on you for taking that last puff before fading to black…hope you didn’t have to make a dash for the lawn (or should I say mulch) to make a deposit. Nothing a glass of OJ or a teaspoon of sugar wouldn’t cure I’m sure!

  • MaxDuo

Sounds like a pretty interesting mix, but shame about the attempted murder at the end!

  • drdut

I got a metallic taste the first two draws I don’t lnow what caused it because my Romeo this morring started the same way am I doing something wrong??

  • carlos05194

love when the flavors last till the next draw and the oil feel last.

  • Mike Wallace

This has been one of my go-to cigars lately. Love the zing this cigar has and it’s not too strong for me. I know everyone’s stregth gauge is set differently.

Great review! I can’t stop watching these!
