Augusto Reyes Maduro Belicoso Cigar Review

This 6.5×54 dark chocolate wrapped stick offered a fuzzy, very toothy firm feel with a rich oily cocoa aroma. First light reveals a very tight draw, hardly any smoke or flavor. What is there is just a mild tobacco, although oily and smooth. Taking a 2nd cut off the head opened up the draw to a normal level, just on the snug side. Smoke production improved, although still not voluminous by any means. Flavors were a medium bodied burned coffee, oily slightly sweet tobacco with a finish of slight black pepper flavor and zing. The stick didn’t want to burn evenly, the wrapper falling behind every 10 draws or so and required frequent relights and touchups. After a fresh light the flavors were very rewarding with a creamy, oily coffee and cocoa and slight peppery finish. As the burn deteriorated though, it slid toward the mild side with less smoke output and a general earthy core. The stick continued from here to 1:30 where it had a little over 1″ remaining but probably due to multiple relights, got very hot a bit early. Thank you very much to Ken Glass for sending this for review, I greatly appreciate it! Photography by BG Pictures.

Cheap Stick Shootout 2 Cigar Review

Cheap Stick Shootout 2 Cigar Review

This is the 2nd Cheap Stick Shootout – today we have the Thompson Empresario Maduro Churchill vs. the Perfect Cut Corona Tubos. The Empresario comes in at 7×48, the Perfect Cut at 5.5×42. Both are a mild-medium cigar, the Empresario being a traditional long filler handmade, the Perfect Cut a machine made short filler. Draw and burn on both were very good, the Empresario being on the tight side, the Perfect cut on the loose side. Burn time was 50 min and 30 min respectively, where they both became hot for my taste and I ended them. Flavor wise they are completely different. The Empresario gave a little bit of complexity, showing a light leather with slight sweetness and touch of pepper during the first 2 thirds. The last third it switched to a very creamy coffee flavor with a long lasting finish. The Perfect cut started with a very mild grassy taste, and bringing a mild wood in the 2nd third. The last third it changed to a very hot pepper, dominating the flavors both on the draw and finish. Photography by BG Pictures.

Cutter Comparison: Spike vs. Punch vs. Straight vs. Angle

Posted on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 in Accessory Reviews, Polls

This is a comparison of the major types of different ways to cut a cigar. Shown are the characteristics and differences between the new Cigar Spike, a punch cutter built in to one of my lighters I got from Buylighters.com, a traditional straight cut by a Cuban Crafters Perfect Cutter, and on a torpedo a straight vs. angled cut by a Xikar. The video is in two parts (part two will play automatically after one). Photography by BG Pictures.

Along with the videos we have a poll – tell us what your favorite cut is and comment on why!

What is your preffered cut?

Reyes Family Cigars Premier Gordo Cigar Review

Reyes Family Cigars Premier Gordo Cigar Review

This 6×60 double tapered stick is unique in that both ends are open, making the cut completely unnecessary. Luckily they designed it just right, and both the burn and draw were very good right from the start with no issues. Draw was actually on the loose side with just the right amount of resistance, something that surprised me given the small opening. Body was mild-medium with fairly simple flavors, having one predominant flavor at a time. They included sweet smooth leather, cocoa and tobacco, with a mild pepper and spice on the finish, which was short and fairly clean. Thank you very much to Reyes Family Cigars for donating this stick for review! Photography by BG Pictures.
