Shop Review: Charles P. Stanley Cigar Company, St. Louis, MO

Review: When you walk in, you basically walk into their bar/lounge area. There are a few couches and booths at the front of the lounge, with a few TV’s for whatever is on. The center of the bar area is the bar.

The Humidor, is actually locked. It is a small room that is tightly packed with cigars. You just need to ask a staff to let you in. They advise you on not smoking inside their humidor (there is a sign that says it). The staff is easy to talk to about cigars and will help you out if needed. Prices are reasonable, maybe a tad higher compared to say, Cigar International (retail) Superstore. The staff will also offer to cut your cigar, with a guillotine, punch or v-cut.

The “smoking experience”, their ventilation is very strong and have certain “draft zones” for sucking up air. Of course, it sells like a cigar bar. But, smoke doesn’t linger around, which is good for your clothes, they don’t stink nearly as bad afterwards (useful, on a business trip, especially when you pack light).

Their ventilation system means using matches to light your cigar is frustrating. They do have a “house” tabletop torch (I think a 5-flame). Unfortunately their torch is extremely finicky to use. Hopefully a local will take pity on and offer their torch (since it’s not wise to pack your own torch in your carry-on).

So, for downtown St. Louis, not too far from the St. Louis Arch, it is a place worth visiting, just need to find parking on the street or garage.

Shop Review: Deadwood Tobacco Company, Deadwood SD

Shop Website: Deadwoodtobaccoco.com

Review: Deadwood Tobacco Company is one of the few true cigar shops to be found in South Dakota. It is located in the basement of the Oyster Bar in historic downtown Deadwood. Access to the good stuff can be found in the Oyster Bar, or by going down a slightly creepy flight of stairs off Main Street. They have a large walk-in humidor, as well as a nice selection of pipe tobaccos and premium cigarette brands. Due to state laws, the only tobacco products that can be consumed on premises are those sold ” in house”. The cigar selection ranges from every day cheap smokes to top end premiums. Deadwood Tobacco Company also has a close relationship with Drew Estate, featuring three exclusives. Fat Bottom Betty, Sweet Jane, and Crazy Alice are all sweetened, infused cigars similar to the ACID line. Since I’m not too big on that line, I enjoy the reliable supply of the Liga, MUWAT, and KFC lines, along with just about any other D.E. offering. Friday and Saturday nights feature the Brandon Sprague Blues Band, a high energy and very talented group of guys. Seating is quite limited, especially when the band is playing. The “lounge area” only consists of two couches, most seating is at bar tables and chairs. Along with a full bar, they have a nice selection of humidors and accessories. Some of the stock seems a bit on the old and possibly moldy side, but overall a stick from their humidor can be trusted to be in good smoking condition. Staffing is kind of hit and miss as far as willingness to jump in and help, but they are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Sometimes you just have to go to them first. If you’re in the area for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, or just passing through on vacation, stop by check them out!

Shop Review: Holts

Shop Website: www.holts.com

Review: There are many great online cigar retailers, but Holt’s is absolutely the top choice if you favor any of the following brands: Ashton, Arturo Fuente, My Father, or Tatuaje. Why, you ask? Holt’s is the sister company to Ashton Distributors which, of course, owns Ashton brands. Similarly, Ashton Cigars are made by the Fuente family and other Ashton brands such as La Aroma de Cuba and San Cristobal are made by the Garcia (My Father) family–these business relationships mean Holt’s is able to make sweetheart deals with Fuente and My Father and pass along great prices to consumers. I’ve searched hard, but have yet to find better prices on these brands. That being said, the site also carries many popular brands like Padron, Rocky Patel, Drew Estate, Cammacho, Davidoff, etc. If you order during business hours, they always ship your stogies that evening around 4 PM, so delivery is fast. Customer service is excellent and the Holt’s mailing list provides tons of daily deals.

Shop Review: Cigar Mojo, King Of Prussia, PA

Shop Website: www.cigar-mojo.com

Review: Cigar Mojo opened in October 2013 and has been a standout B&M in the greater Philadelphia area ever since.

SERVICE: The owners are friendly, engaging, and not only remember your name, but remember your preferences and are always ready to provide meaningful recommendations. They don’t have the stand-offish attitude that is all too common at B&Ms.

SELECTION: The well-stocked humidor stands out because it has all the heavy hitters you’d expect, including Ashton, Arturo Fuente, My Father, Perdomo, Padron, Drew Estate, and Rocky Patel; but, it also has a ton of harder to find boutique brands in case you’re feeling adventurous.

SPACE: This is what makes this shop special. It has a spacious, classy lounge with comfy chairs, free wi-fi, HDTVs, and one of the most premium ventilation/air purification systems I’ve ever experienced. The owner’s boast that the air system is “casino quality.” What I really like about the lounge is the fact that it’s open to members and non-members alike. You don’t feel like a second-class citizen if you’re not a member because you can mingle in the very same lounge.

CONCLUSION: The prices are pretty good for a B&M. They always have new stuff coming into the shop. Events have been frequent and enjoyable. If you’d like to be a member, the shop offers humidified lockers and 24/7 swipecard access to the lounge. Definitely the best place to smoke in the Philadelphia/Philadelphia Suburban area, especially during the relentless winter.

Shop Review: Cordova Cigars, Pensacola, FL

Review: I found Cordova Cigars earlier this year and was surprised that Pensacola had such a nice, relaxing B&M establishment. They have a great selection of cigars in a big walk in humidor and a fun, friendly staff. Hell, I even learned how to play Cuban Dominos in their Domino room. Good times!

Shop Review: Brown’s Cigar Store, Corning NY

Review:This was the first ever B&M I ever went to, on my 18th birthday no less. The staff is always very helpful, and while their selection may not be totally comprehensive it is considerable and they will likely have something to meet your taste and budget. That is if you can afford NYS tax rates (minimum $6 for anything I care to smoke). They also carry a considerable array of pipes and pipe tobacco at somewhat more reasonable prices.

Shop Review, Habana Cigar House, Rolling Meadows, IL

Review: Surprisingly there’s not a lot of cigar lounges in northwest Chicago suburbs despite being frigid for half the year. Probably the crazy state tobacco taxes keep them out of business. But this place is a little gem in a nondescript strip mall. They allow byob and can buy your favorite libation from a store next door. The lounge manager is always smiles and rolls some decent blends of his own on the cheap. I ask him what I’m in the mood for at a price range and he delivers without yucking me up for more expensive options. I love the decent prices. I’ve smoked great Fuente’s for $7 and that includes the tax! Not bad for a B&M. Usual cushy leather sofas and giant screen tv’s. Great for a casual meet or breather after a tough workday.

Shop Review: Tobacco Field, Wilmington, DE

Review: If you are ever in Delaware, and are looking for a good place to pick up a couple cigars I highly recommend Tobacco Field. They are very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Each time I visit this store, I am not disappointed with the quality of their products, or how they are maintained. Also, when I first started my new hobby a young woman that works there (she is actually pictured on their website a couple times) help to get me started and taught me a few basic things about cigars and cigar smoking while I was there. Although I haven’t sat down and stayed to smoke, there is a small lounge where you can relax and puff on one of your new acquisitions.

Regards,

Shop Review: Famous Smoke

Posted on Monday, July 7, 2014 in Shop Reviews

By: iamchum

Shop Website: http://www.famous-smoke.com/

Review: Famous-Smoke has been around for a very very long time, and it shows with the comprehensive range available on their website, from cigars to ashtrays, cutters to air purifiers, humidors to humidifiers (although there is a larger range at Cheaphumidors.com, naturally, and much of the range is the same as anywhere else).

The website itself is a little cluttered, and they have such a monumental number of promotions, it is always a good idea, if you are shopping on Famous-Smoke, to double check to see if you aren’t missing any goodies when purchasing your favorite stogies.

The also administer three other sites, Cigar Advisor, Cigar Monster and Cigar Auctioneer, which specialize in cigar knowledge, cigar specials and cigar auctions, respectively. Keep in mind, with the scores and reviews, these are user driven, and, particularly in the less popular, and Famous Smoke exclusive lines, need to be taken with a grain of salt.

My experience purchasing from Famous-Smoke is colored by the fact that I reside in Australia (a great haven for the nanny state). Famous Smoke won’t falsely declare goods on your behalf to lower your tax bill, however, from placing the order to shipment, I was helped all the way by both Brenda and Brenda (there are two), was able to amend the order multiple times, and even had some goodies thrown in. For a large online store serving an international clientele, I found their service impeccable.

Cigars were shipped quickly despite being handled by USPS (experience may vary depending on your local provider as well), and they came very well packed with lots of protection provided by air pillows, and well sealed in double zip locked bags. None of the cigars I have received in my 3 orders this year have been damaged beyond requiring some settling before smoking.

It has taken me many attempts from a number of reputable and some less reputable online retailers to find a store that I trust, but in Famous Smoke, I believe I have found one. I highly recommend trying them out.

Shop Review: Spec’s, Round Rock TX

Shop Website : http://www.specsonline.com/

Review: Spec’s is a great multi-stop shop store for not only cigar enthusiasts, but alcohol lovers as well. Anytime that I have been to the location in Round Rock I have had all of my questions answered by a professional who had knowledge of what I was talking about. The prices are pretty much run of the mill for any B&M so don’t really be expecting any blow out deals unless you’re trying to bundle on something. They do offer very competitive prices for buying multiples of pretty much anything in their store. The humidor in the store is large enough to be considered it’s own little mom and pop cigar joint with quite a variety to choose from. My only concern with their selection is the fact that I didn’t see Padron anywhere on the shelves….maybe I’m just blind though.
