swisher-deJACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2014) — Swisher International Inc. and Drew Estate Tobacco Company disclosed today that they have entered into a definitive purchase agreement whereby Swisher International will acquire Drew Estate in its entirety. Drew Estate will continue to operate under its current management team as a subsidiary of Swisher.

“We began under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass in Brooklyn, N.Y. with a laser focus on ‘The Rebirth of Cigars.’ Friends, retailers, and consumers connected with our passion and authenticity, supporting us at each stage of our growth. We are eternally grateful to all of those who have helped build Drew Estate, and look forward to advancing the Drew Estate legacy with a great partner,” stated Jonathan Drew, Co-founder of Drew Estate, from Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

Drew Estate Co-founder Marvin Samel added, “This is a dream come true. From the moment we met the team at Swisher and began speaking of a possible acquisition, it was clear that, as a family business, they understood the culture we have created and completely supported our desire to keep our family at Drew Estate intact. The team we have built in Miami and Nicaragua represents the heart and soul of ‘The Rebirth of Cigars’ and will continue to drive that vision into the future. In fact, we’re just getting started.”

Michael Cellucci, President of Drew Estate, said, “We are excited to join the distinguished team at Swisher. After spending the past few months interacting with the Swisher team, we have come to understand their commitment to the cigar and OTP categories, as well as the premium cigar segment. After the transaction closes, we will continue to run our business as we have in the past, and will be able to leverage the resources of Swisher to continue our growth with a renewed focus on our commitment to quality products and people – two of the core principles of the Drew Estate belief system.”

“As a global leader in the cigar and OTP categories, Swisher prides itself on developing, manufacturing, and distributing the most innovative and high quality tobacco products available. I see those same principles in Drew Estate,” said Peter Ghiloni, President and CEO of Swisher International. “The products produced by Drew Estate and its distribution partners Joya De Nicaragua, Royal Agio Cigars, and Tsuge pipes are top-quality market leaders in their respective segments. The creativity, passion and innovation of Drew Estate employees and management are a perfect match for Swisher, and we look forward to welcoming them to our family.”

The transaction is scheduled to close during the 4th quarter of 2014. Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

WTF? I would never have guessed they were going to be sell outs. Also how is Swisher International Group a family business? I don’t think I’m going to be purchasing any more drew estates……..

  • Raz Amzaleg

Fuck drew estate, we dont need them, i have my cubans, my behikes, my swags and aging room, and a lot more favorites and new cigars, WE DONT NEED DREW ESTATE!!!

  • pittjitsu

Well, good going Jonathan, the all mighty dollar wins over integrity once again. And please, stop the PR bullshit about swisher being some family owned company. Swisher makes shit cigars for people to take apart and fill with Pot. That is their forte. Well, there goes my favorite brand of cigars down the shitter. I wonder how long it will take to see JayZ and Kanye West photographed with a “Drew” hanging out of their mouths. Get ready for Strawberry and Grape Drew Estates. This is the worst news and a HUGE hit to the cigar fans out there.

    • LFC

Funny you mention Swisher for filling with pot. I once heard Acids referred to as “blunts for rich kids.”

    • Garret Robinson

Phillies Blunts are far more popular for pot… having said that, not sure what that has to do with any of this. I’m seriously pissed too. This is not good…

    • kellyj

Have to disagree. Its Capitalism, Its what he wanted to do. Good for him. I didn’t particularly like his cigars…but God Bless him for making $$. Got to support that.
Folks throw the word “sell out ” a lot. Thats poppycock.
who doesn’t want to make a lot of moolah

  • pittjitsu

I just had to come back to make sure I wasn’t dreaming this.. This is a travesty. Absolutely no good can come out of this except for the bank accounts of Jonathan Drew. Introducing the Acid grape and the Undercrown Mango. Watch

  • But.. it’s not April 1st…

  • Jmaxf123

WOW. He probably got scared by all the upcoming FDA regulations and figured hiding under the wings of an industry giant would save his career. I bet he won’t be the only one to do something like this..

    • kellyj

The FDA isn’t messing with “normal premium cigars that we all know and love. Flavored cigars YES. And Drew Estate sold a lot of the “cigars” called Acid.
But, no worries about the FDA for the regular ones….Padron, Fuente, My Father ETC
      This came from my Congressman…

  • Garret Robinson

i thought the ebola crisis was bad… too soon? i do not get this at all. Drew was building an empire on his own. Everything he was throwing into humidors was selling like hot cakes. All of that will be in question now. Well, looks like I’ll have to buy up some ligas and undercrowns.

  • Joseph Szeremet

This doesn’t really shock me too much. When I would watch the videos of there facility tours I couldn’t help but think of how expensive of an operation they were running. It seemed too big for a market like cigars that is a niche market. Plus there were some tells in hind sight. All the people that have left DE, and Hoya over the past couple of years. And lets not forget that DE has worked with swisher recently. The Nirvana cigar that was a collaboration with Royal Gold, which is owned by Swisher. That very well could have been a test run for a potential buy out. Lets just hope that Willie Herrera will start his own company.

  • kellyj

Never a big fan of Drew Estate at all. Probably never will be. I understand why he(they) did it. Its called Capitalism..And, I support that! Just not a fan of his cigars. I rarely buy cigars from the “big boys” Altadis, General. 99% of my sticks are Stands alone…Fuente, Padron, My Father, Alec Bradley, AJ Fernandez, etc

  • Ben Smith

I think everyone should start boycotting all Drew Estate cigars now…

…maybe then I could get some good last minute cigarbid deals. 😉 heheh…
