Partagas 8-9-8 Varnished Cigar Review

This Cuban 6.75×43 stick features a very spongy lumpy packed dark brown wrapper with a glove soft oily feel, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, double triple cap and very faint cedar aroma. First light reveals a snug draw with good smoke output showing full bodied flavors of a thick smooth syrupy earth with a little bit of heat coming through on the finish. The first third burns very well opening the draw to normal producing nice thick smoke. Flavors are largely unchanged bringing a cream to the draw and a tingle on the lips through the finish. Construction is great dropping the ash in inch chunks. Half way through the 2nd third flavors drop the musty earth replaced by a slick creamy wood, carrying still through the long full finish. The ash still drops in inch chunks hitting the 1/2 way point 35 min in. Ending at 1:20 the last third showed no further changes to flavors although the quality of burn went down, not wanting to stay lit and the body went down to a medium. Thank you to the anonymous donor for sending this in for review!

Great review… How does the Dominican stack up against the cuban?

    • No relation, they only share a name, as with all the copied Cuban names.

  • Camshaft83

Sorry. I meant which do you prefer?

    • I have not had the non-Cuban 898, you would see it in the review list. Can’t say I’m a fan of any of the non-Cuban namesakes in general.

Thanks for the reply! And again great review. I really enjoy watching them.

    Hey Bryan,

I think you might need to start doing a little research before reviewing “Cuban”cigars.

There’s no such thing as a double cap Cuban stick….

    • Well then it’s a good thing I VERY specifically said I’m not a Cuban cigar expert isn’t it 😉 I also said it was very sloppy as you can see in the pic. The first cap was almost completely covered so I couldn’t be sure…as I said. Oh, and you get a slow clap for registering tonight JUST to make that snarky comment to make yourself feel better 😉

Wasn’t trying to come off as a smart ass. I only read the post and didn’t see the video. Sorry man..

Habanoscigars – You should probably get familiar with how to comment on this Blog. Unless you are going to Genuflect to Bryan like the other sheep do – you will likely get a snarky response.

Textvet you hit the nail on the head. bryan does a good job but we can disagree with him sometimes. It makes it easier for us cigar lovers to learn more that way. also i think a lot of the people on this web sight are newer cigar smokers witch is fine but that’s the reason for the cult like sheepism.

Jeez! Lighten up or go troll somewhere else.

A very well articulated comparison. I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. I like the idea of more Cuban reviews and more comparisons. After all cigar smoking is a hobby and, unlike cigarettes, we like to try out new blends, sizes, origins, etc. In that sence, this fascination with the forbidden fruit is entirely valid and completely natural. Your comparisons, impressions, and reviews ARE useful even if (real) Cuban are (very) difficult to come by.

I’m not sure but cuban cigars are usually snug to draw. Aren’t they?

As always great review. Thank you.

  • Love your new intro into the review!
I’ve only had one bonafide Cuban cigar and that was some years back. It was a most excellent stick although I don’t remember much about it other than it had a solid full profile and I enjoyed it very much. Would need to revisit my yesteryear Canadian friends and develop an alliance to be able to partake of the forbidden sticks again.
    Great review!

See, this is why I luv this site. I learn new things all the time from Bryan as well as his audience. Did not know the contrast between Cubans and non-Cubans AND that all Cubans have triple caps. It’s all good. Luv the BOTL community you’re building here, Bryan.

Great review as usual, ever had a neighbor interrupt while reviewing?

Thanks for reviewing some cubans as well – I am a bit surprised that you have so few viewers from outside the US, though. I find your reviews some of the best on the web, always to the point and quite objective.

So even though a lot of the cigars you review are not easily available here in Europe, I still enjoy watching them, but really appreciate that you do these as well.

I have tried the 8-9-8 on a couple of occasions, but think I will buy a couple again, it’s always fun to compare with your impression 🙂
