Xikar Pull Punch Cigar Cutter Review

This unit was generously sent in by viewer Dan Forsley and will be going out in a future giveaway soon so keep an eye out for it – thank you again Dan!

Featuring an all-metal design, this unit is small and bullet shaped with a keyring for attachment. Usually sporting a screw cap this instead utilizes a presumably magnetically secured extending barrel with a telescoping cutter end that appears at full extension. It has a built in cleaner so simply closing the barrel pushes out and tobacco leaf debris. The cutter itself is sharp as can be and is larger than the vast majority on the market, a VERY welcome thing for ring gauges above 50. Operation is smooth and simple there’s really no way to screw up a punch cutter unless it’s not sharp. This is. It has plenty of closing force to stay retracted in your pocket, there is zero concern about accidental extension. Pricey but well worth it IMO considering the engineering and manufacturing quality. Plus it carries the Xikar lifetime warranty (as long as they still produce it you’ll get another if you experience a problem).

  • Awesome, smart design from Xikar. Not a punch fan myself but I have used them on a chisel tip ie LFD — punch on both sides of the chisel and it was turned out great! Thanks for the review Bryan!

Like the overall size and design…

If your going to get a punch cutter, that looks like the one to get.
    Thanks for the review!

    Nice,great review,never used a punch before.

I’m a huge punch fan and am currently working on a review for a triple punch cutter for another site.

BG: Have you ever double punched or used a clover leaf punch on really large ring gauges? I find this greatly helps the draw on big rgs.

    • At that point why bother. Just cut it normally.

    Thanks for the review
I now have 2 punch cutters but this one is interesting

I agree on the punch cutters, mine never gets used. Bryan, did you ever get satisfaction on your Xikar lighter? A lifetime guarantee is only good if the company wants to stand behind it.

    • Nope they never returned any of my contacts. I don’t even care at this point, and it was a good thing since I found a new favorite lighter in the Prometheus!

I have one of these and really like it. But for large cigars, Xikar actually makes an even larger punch (which I also have). Not the pull-construction, but really great as well, and fitting for those 50 to 60 ringgauge cigars: http://www.xikar.com/products/cutters/011%2Dpunches/

I’ve had one of these on my key ring for a year or so now. The finish has pretty much worn off from wear (I think it was the gunmetal finish), but other than that, it’s a great little cutter. I’ve only used it a handful of times but it’s still really sharp and Bryans observation about a tight lock up is correct. I’ve never even worried about it opening up.

Just one word of warning, if you travel a lot like I do…the TSA may take an interest in it. Never had a problem, I just have to explain what it is a lot. 🙂

I just received my 9mm punch and priority to this I was using a cheapie cutter which was not cutting very well. After using this Xikar punch for the last week, I have to say WOW. All dozen or so cigars I have punched, drew perfectly. Thanks for the review and keep up the good work.
