The Football Cigar First Down Cigar Review

This unique 72×4.5 stick is obviously shaped like a football, aimed at fans and collectors. The company makes unique versions with team colors ordered through the website as well. It features a squishy very light pack, very good aesthetics with lace and line details of contrasting leaf. The finish is butter soft with a potent sweet hay aroma. First light reveals a perfect draw with thin light smoke output showing medium bodied flavors of a peppery tobacco and a woody finish with a bit of a zing. The first third needs a touchup after the first stripe of maduro leaf hits the burnline. Flavors are down a tick to mild-medium with just a soft tobacco on the draw and a touch of pepper spice and wood on the short finish. Halftime comes at 35 minutes adding a nice thick cream to thee draw and finish while also bumping up the body and adding back a touch of cinnamon through the finish. Ending at the last inch 55 minutes in, it got too hot for my taste but stayed the course with the profile and good construction. Thank you very much to The Football Cigar for providing this for review! Leave a comment below to win one, I’ll pick a winner at the end of the week! Entrants must be 18+ and have a US mailing address.

  • lrogers

Thanks for the review. Looks like this one worked out better than the first one. Here in west Ky it’s 2 degrees with a real feel of -11. It’s brisk. Looks like your getting some of what came through here yesterday. Stay warm.

  • mjsaltmarsh

Score one for The Football Cigar!!!

It is nice that they improved on the last one, moving it away from a novelty cigar to a pleasant smoke.

  • wm2slc

Interesting.. would be a novelty for the Super Bowl for sure.. ha ha Sounds like it is a pretty good smoke as well..

  • americanpalemale

I’ll try it. Seems interesting. Thanks for the review as always.

  • Daniels

Glad it turned out better this time. As always, Thanks for all your work!! See you soon!

  • mufdvr6976

interesting… that would be nice super bowl weekend!!

  • rpharmrx

Thanks again for your reviews- good kind of cigar to smoke while watching that tremendous BCS game in sunny Southern California!

  • Mr. Guy

Pretty cool that these guys put in the effort to improve. Better for the smoker, and better for the neighbor not finding half a punted football in the yard!

  • Koach77

Would be interesting to see Cigar Aficionado do a review with their smoking jackets on. Nicely done Bryan with the nasty wind that picked up, and that the football cigar was legit this time.

  • lefty177

Seems like a normal cigar now, instead of just a novelty item. Keep up the great work Bryan!

  • FTG2Voge

Looks interesting. I’m not the world’s biggest football fan, but the cigar sounds good.

  • joelala

Cool concept. I am glad they improved the stick.

  • Dylan

Go Broncos!!!! Can’t wait for the game this weekend!

  • CrownP

As a Seminole I would love it!

  • Jason Isbaner

I was waiting for you to bash this Stick, I saw the first review of the old blend and didn’t have high hopes! Now after this review I will check out the website, cool enough concept!

  • jsdarr

I think it’s great that the new version is not only smokeable, but also has transitions. It’s almost like they blended it with you in mind, Bryan.

  • LigaPrivadaFan

Great stick to review at this time of the football season, you should get a few orders for the company great SuperBowl favor!! To bad it’s -10 for a high around here would love to smoke a stick even if it was a football shaped one 🙁

  • leahcim7001

I’m impressed that the company improved their product even though they could have kept it strictly as a novelty item. Sounds like one to try… then again any cigar sounds good. It has been so cold here in the Midwest, I haven’t been able to enjoy a cigar in over a week!

  • Guy

    Dear Bryan,
Not at all interested in the cigar or the game ,but a
nice review of It anyhow. Keep the good work up.
    Guy ,

  • DavidKIT

Definately neat looking. It would probably spend some time in my humidor so I could show everyone before I smoked it.

  • otrdriver6767

I am glad to hear that the cigar was to your taste. This is the first time I see you in a jacket. Must be very cool. I know its cold here in Maine. Summer is on the way.

  • psehunter

AWSOME! A Super Bowl party gift that makes seance, can’t wait . That would have been funny if you had said your smoking at the 30 yard line and we’ll see what we get as we approach the 50 yard line. Ha! Love it! Thanks Bryan …..

  • Jaylang

novelty cigars always confuse me.. thats why i never buy them. but after the good review it is worth a try. thanks for the review

  • jablaze

Man im glad they changed that blend!! I have bif plans for the Super Bowl and would love to include one of these sticks! Thanks Bryan for the great review. ..stay warm brother.

  • sdh3237

Great timing for the review. I watched the video right after the exciting national championship game between Florida State and Auburn. Maybe if I win I will smoke the Football after the Super Bowl. 🙂

  • yosef5

There are so many good cigars
Why do we need a football

  • Toolride

Good thing they listened and made an actual cigar this go around.

  • phaedron

Indeed, showing up at the Super Bowl party with one of these bad boys would cause quite the stir. God knows we need some kind of distraction up here in the frozen northlands now that our beloved Packers are knocked off…

  • skynzep

Nice review Bryan! My brothers and I have started a pregame ritual of having a cigar before every KC Chiefs game all season long. This cigar would have been perfect this past weekend as the Chiefs got smoked by the Colts.

  • dwtate5

I’ll have to get one if Colts win superbowl. That would be a good way to celebrate.

  • gbcdeacon

Nice review. Not sure if would buy it though.

  • mikeyw

Thanks for the review. Nice to know that they are not just a gimmick. Would be the perfect way to end football season.

  • byar

It looks like they really upgraded this cigar. But I enjoyed the review of the original because the cigar was so bad, and we all have gotten stuck with a bad stick.

  • buffalo_pat

Thanks for the review Bryan. Glad this one was better than the previous ones.

  • rjrst13

Nice review. This stick would make an interesting conversation piece. Nice to see that they improved upon the blend.

  • Brent

Nice review on a interesting looking cigar. Good to know it doesn’t taste to bad.

  • capital75757

I think this is a smart marketing choice. My father-in-law loves football and he would be ecstatic to smoke one during a game.

  • shawa

    nice stick

  • Parker

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should… are you listening Drew Estate Egg?

  • puffrey

Glad to hear that the quality is up exponentially, the first review was tough to watch after a while just seeing how awful it was.

So would you compare the draw to that of a standard torpedo? Knowing torps arent your preferred option, it seemed like this one did ok

  • Turn4Chatter

I wonder how many people actually buy them to smoke

  • Michael

Great job! Interesting smoke for sure.

  • ryanc

Sounds like one to try. Just to say I have. Thanks for the review Bryan.

  • Tempoguy55

Very unique gigar gift! Thankfully a blend now that isn’t only a novelty but also a good cigar. I love the combination of the two. Awesome gift idea!

  • Dale

    Very nice.

  • The Butcher

$24 to $25 seem a high for a novelty cigar.

  • pato1001

Sounds like a big improvement from the first football cigar. great review.

  • Dylan

no, but really, Cowboys, all day long.
Would love to give one of these a shot!

  • socks

Interesting cigar to say the least. Good review as always. Not totally sold on it yet, but will definitely try one when I get a chance

  • Seco

I lean toward the bigger ring gauges, but this one looks a little to big for me. Way to take one for the team!!!

  • chad1955

Well, if you’re looking for a “hook” to separate your product from “the others” it would seem these guys have done it. I suspect that a lot of people would buy these both as a support to their teams and to raz some of their friends who support other teams. Quite a concept.

  • Christopher

It’d be nice to smoke this while watching the Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Fingers crossed!

  • hudsonspt

    Interesting looking cigar.

  • kb9311

Great review as always! I’ll have to give these a shot, looks very interesting and would be fun to try out!

  • tjb5588

Anyone care to share how they roll them with different leafs to make the laces?

  • Whitelightning

What do you get when you mix a football cigar and a hooker???

    An illegal procedure.

    • Whitelightning

      Laces out!!

  • kpoper

So the the first down turns into a touch down!

  • Here is my comment! Football cigar means football comment.
Packers!!!! Green Bay packers! What the hell? Why every time we get into a playoff with the San fransico 49rs do we just go “ok we are done playing for the season!” We did it last year. We did it this last game. That cigar has more talent then the 49rs and we won’t be able to beat that either! Lol lol.
Sorry. No offense 49rs fans. Or should I say no offense or defense!! Lol lol.

  • Robert

Seems better as a conversation piece than a real smoke.

  • Cigaruss

I think the marketing angle for this cigar would now be have each cigar cloaked in the various NFL teams. Or branch out into college football. Either with a cedar sleeve or something of that vein. Interesting, looked like fun.
    GO PANTHERS!!!!!!!

  • PlatinumRespect

    Great review!

  • LV2HNT

Nice to see they stepped up there GAME!!!! Ha Ha It would be fun to have to light up when the Denver Broncos go to the super bowl since I am in COLORADO!!!!

  • earnesto

Would love to compare this to the Estate Egg! Thanks for the review!

  • ARM

Typically these gimmick cigars are a 4th and 62. This one sounds like a 1st and goal!

  • garret

Looks like a fun Smoke Bryan. I agree with Edge above me in that this should have a football response. As a VIKINGS fan, I am a hopeless romantic and by the end of the season I need a Xanax just to watch a game. I love the game of football and wouldn’t mind the more than a novelty football cigar.

ps, Edge, speaking of no defense!! The Pak lost most of their 2ndary to injury and couldn’t stop the pass. I’m not a hater of the Pak, I have great respect for all great football players. Aaron Rogers is an animal for sure. Look forward to the border battle next year. Cheers!

  • Chaz

Sounds halfway decent this time around!

  • new2sticks

Nice parting gift for my Auburn friends. Go NOLES!

  • MarioBento

Very unique cigar. Great review as always Bryan!

  • Glad to hear it is a respectable smoke now, thanks for letting us have a chance to win one!

  • willigeo02

Sounds way better than the first football you smoked…LOL

  • john

Will you autograph it for the winner?

  • marty76

looks much better than the first time. good for them and for us smokers for getting the cigar right the second time around. persistence pays off!!

  • Swede214

Very cool looking cigar, sounds like I would enjoy this cigar. Thanks

  • Rob.n.Denver

Thanks Bryan. I wouldn’t had given this a second thought were it not for your review. Looks like it could be a good and fun game day smoke.

  • jamesj64

Thanks for a great review. Somewhat surprised that it is such a good cigar compared to the first generation.

  • Tommz81

Well after the first generation review I wasn’t even going to watch this one. Glad I did. Thanks Bryan.

  • btubesing

Very glad to see they got it right this time, as a HUGE football fan this really peaks my interest!

    Thanks Bryan

  • Michael Cabot

    Interesting smoke for sure.

  • ljbabyak

I’m curious how they put the laces on there. We’re they glued on or something?

  • pauldcote

Very interesting…..do you think aging it would add to the complexity at all? Definitely would love to try

  • RyanG

I’m surprised that the blend has improved so much. I’m tempted to try one now, I haven’t experienced cinnamon flavor in too many cigars before.

  • Sirfubes

Really a neat idea. These would definitely stand out in anyone’s cigar collection!

  • Steveab

Happy to see it was not in Minnesota Vikings colors as it may not have lit or burned well …

  • Twin1NAC

Glad their change in blend and construction was a positive one. Hope I win!

  • eslifer

Sounds like my Eagles – just couldn’t play a full 60 minutes.

  • RamzaFreak20

If the Saints make it to the super bowl, I may have to pick on of these up.

Looks like the reduced the max ring size from the previous version which may have helped the flavors a bit.

  • spice bomb

cigar looked great for ah superbowl party, who woulda thunk it!

  • Whickster77

I want to score a touchdown with the first down, TOUCHDOWN

  • eric.hanson

Glad to hear it’s a completely new blend, also sounds like it packs quite a bit of flavor for a stick that gets to be such a big ring gage in the middle.

  • bdragon

That would be really cool for the Super Bowl. I like that they are doing something to separate themselves and improving at the same time.

  • EzyE77

glad its better but deep down was hoping it would suck. Kinda like watching you suffer every once in a while;) especially after every time I see the review list with all the great cigars you have smoked. Im trying to catch up. Thanks for the site. Love it.

  • Stringhawk

Bryan, I’m pretty sure your neighbor was glad this one was a keeper. All joking aside, I’m glad they took the criticism and made a revised product that was actually worthwhile.

  • Rick

Very Cool! Thanks for the review.
Now the question is; smoke it during the Super Bowl or just have it out on display.
Then smoke it the next day of course!

  • I bet any quarterback that enjoys smoking cigars would love to get their hands on one of those! If so, could be considered something like a quarterback draw? OR I bet any punter would get a kick out of it! HA HA!!
Hey Bryan, Pass one to me will ya?

  • SmokeRings

It’s too cool to smoke. If I would win it, I would make something that looks likes the Lombardi Trophy and put it on display in my humidor. I could try to convince my girlfriend that “it’s a Major Award!” just like the leg lamp in the movie A Christmas Story.

  • dman

football shaped cigar scored. nice review Thanks

  • Yegis79

You pick a winner for the cigar, yet? lol
