Cigar Obsession Cigar Lottery #16 Winner! We have a new sponsor this round, General Cigar!! Please show them some love in welcoming them to the contest! In addition to the 150 cigars the winner this time shall receive a gorgeous 100+ count unit from General Cigar!

We have the winner for the 14th CO Lottery!

If you are new, watch the video to see what you could win, and keep reading to see the rules and tips!

HOW TO ENTER

This is going to be completely user driven kind of like the Lotto. However it doesn’t involve money or purchasing tickets with money, instead you are donating to the collective prize pool to enter!

Each time I will accept incoming packages with your cigars to add to the pool, and will update you with videos as entries come in. To add your entry you need to send in 2 or 4 cigars, for one or two entries per person/mailing address. Yes you can put all 4 cigars in one package. Damaged sticks will not be entered.

SHIPPING TIPS

When shipping cigars, it’s ok to use baggies as long as they are packed tight enough so they don’t roll around enough to be damaged. If however you have had any stored too dry, do not include any humidification, just ship them as-is. Use a small box. If you already have a box you can ship them 1st class for under $3 just about anywhere. I also like the flat rate priority mail boxes, they are about $5 good to go. Stuff the box enough so nothing moves around and has some cushion if need be. Protect the cigars from moving around in short. Use delivery confirmation, I am not responsible for lost shipments, do not ask me about them. All entries will be shown in update videos.

RULES

NO CUBANS! I’m semi-ok with reviewing them on rare occasion but I will not be involved in any way distributing them.
All participants must be 18+ years of age and reside in the US.
At the end of each lottery I will produce a video showing the random winner being drawn using random.org and the winner will receive the whole prize shipment from me!
Full-sized Cigars, ONLY, no cigarillos.
Name brand, banded cigars only – no no-name, off-brand store bundle-only or house blends.
No intentional crap cigars like Ron Mexico or other similar ultra cheap POS smokes. Use common sense, if it’s not a major brand, don’t send it.

FILL OUT, PRINT & RETURN THIS FORM WITH YOUR ENTRIES

Awesome! One suggestion is two parts.
    1. Bump up to 250 cigars
    2. increase to 3 sets of two max per person.

Great job. Thanks from a total newby with cigars. Getting ready to try cigar #4, a Tabak Especial Toro Dulce 6×52 coffee infused cigar.

    • http://www.cigarobsession.com Bryan Glynn

250 if I have to maybe in the future. Adding entries defeats the purpose

  • rodknee

Maybe do 2 separate lotteries (though it may be tough) in which one is decent sticks but under the $8-$10 range and have the other be a premium lottery that includes the humidor for sticks upwards of say $10. This could be a horrible idea…but just my unanalyzed thought :)

    • http://www.cigarobsession.com Bryan Glynn

It will never be that complicated

  • Marc

With humidor = 150 cigars Lottery
    w/o humidor = 200 cigars Lottery

    and/or both

    Two at the same time.

    • gumby_130

      +1

  • Boucher207

BRYAN, why dont you a quarterly cigar lottery?

  • Ellie

    Congratulations to the winner!

About your conundrum, I’d say bump it to 200.
Though, you could also have the lottery be dynamic. The reward would be either the minimum of 150, or whatever was the total cigar count was for that month (no roll-over).

Personally, I like just raising the cap. The second, while being a potential solution, is not as fair to the people entering.

  • malfre01

Why not expand the lottery internationally? I would gladly pay the shipping if I won. Just an idea :)

  • NChSCh

Just disqualify the obvious sampler dog rockets like victor sinclair, gurkha status/beast/seduction/black dragon/titan/beauty/widow maker/etc/etc/etc, torano noventa, and infused cigars. We all know the trash CI passes off as premium smokes in their samplers, if your any kind of serious about the hobby you know to stay away from them because they’re garbage.

I’m not saying that you should make some kind of list of smokes to exclude Brian, but just make a rule that if your smokes cost less than the price of postage they’re disqualified. I for one would love to see an update that had some higher quality smokes in it. Most people watching your channel know enough to understand that the lottery is more than about disposing of their crap sticks. Make a disclaimer on the lottery videos just telling people that if they send in crap it’s going to be thrown out.

I think that this would solve your problem on time in between drawings and make the whole prospect of winning more attractive because you’d win cigars that are actually worth smoking.

    Just pitch out the shit.

    • NChSCh

      Sorry I misspelled your name.

    • LV2HNT

Just a question, I just got a sample pack in from CI. Why do you say they are crap? Because CI sells them of they are a sample pack? The sample pack contains The Ashton VSG Sampler Box includes:
      1 – Ashton VSG Sorcerer (7″ x 49)
      1 – Ashton VSG Torpedo (6.5″ x 55)
      1 – Ashton VSG Wizard (6″ x 56)
      1 – Ashton VSG Robusto (5.5″ x 50)
      1 – Ashton VSG Eclipse (no tube) (6″ x 52)

It was $49.00 plus $4.95 shipping. Should I not buy from CI or do they just put left over crap in there samples? Thanks for a heads up on samplers.

      • Terpdudematt

Not all CI samplers are crap. The one you received sounds awesome. I think what he’s saying is that a lot of their cheap samplers and mega samplers have a lot of lower end cigars thrown in with the premium ones. Once in a while they have great samplers on sale like the Ashton VSG one you got. If they taste and burn great, keep buying them!

        • NChSCh

Exactly Terpdudematt. I buy from CI, CBid, and Cigarsatyourprice all the time. You paid around 10$ a stick for five great cigars, good deal. I’m talking about CI samplers that offer cigars for super cheap like the Gurkha gorge fest happening on CI right now (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/specials/you-pick/gurkha-feast). Take a look at that list and tell me if any of those sticks look familiar…

  • abu1555

All these suggestions to change the lottery,is this what’s happening here? If this the case what about raising it to 200 but instead of one only make it like a 100 first winner ( and that’s plenty cigars) and a 2nd & 3rd place like 60-40 give a winning chance to more followers. Of course minimum of 4per entry. Just a thought…

    • rockjock

Too much work probably. Just leave it as a giant payday.

  • MongoJay

And even 200 should work. But what happens to the other cigars that don’t fit into the 100 plus count humidor prize? Maybe though in a carrying case for the overflow, or a light cutter combo so the winner can start smoking right away.

Or since you’ve had some issues with cheap sticks sneaking in, or too many of one brand (Gurkha) maybe give out a 50 cigar prize for best/ most creative entry as a runner-up prize. Limited edition cigars, rare cigars, stuff like that.

Not sure if any of this will work, just throwing out ideas.

  • Griff

Just a thought, but you could change it to 3 cigars per person and everyone’s entries count as 1. That would raise the amount of people entered to 50 every time. Right now the majority of the entries are 4 cigars so an average of 38 to 40 different people are entered every time. This extra 10 to 12 people in each month may be enough to drag it out for another week or so without changing the odds of winning by too much. (1 in 50 vs 1 in approx. 40)

  • chief791

You can bump it up to 200 or just limt it to one entry per person. That should give you more time because it seems like most people send in 2 entries.

  • geekfish

    Congrats to the winner.

    On changing the lottery problem:
    (1) convert to a no fixed number entry and make it time based. (150 or >4-6wks time). Although this would slow things down.
    (2) I like the 3 cigars fixed idea above.
    (3) I like increasing the quality of smokes, but this is difficult to police. Everyone has different tastes. when you said to slow down the Gurkhas this helps the variety.
    (4) How about offering advertising in a different manner than just in the posts for the giveaway. You have pretty stable donators for the lottery, why not advertise with them a different way to give them the time exposure they need. Banner instead for fixed time?
    (5) I like the idea above of a main lottery of 150+humi and a no-humi “grab bag” for 2nd place winner of 25-50 cigars. Do 1st pull for 150 then remove the winner and throw all the names back in for a 2nd drawing.

I really enjoy and participate in the CO lottery, so look forward to any changes necessary to keep it going.

  • rockjock

200 is a pretty good number to slow it down. It also would be a great Christmas in fill-in-the-blank month for the sole winner.

I do agree with some previous comments that certain “premium” cigars should be excluded. If you spent less than $3 per stick then it shouldn’t count. If the “retail” is $20/stick and CI is selling them for $2/stick you should know they not worth submitting. It is funny to see their super specials show up a couple weeks later in the lottery updates several times.

As for limiting it to one entry per person I would keep it at two. I can ship one entry or two for the same price, so I send in two. I like doubling my chances and moving the lottery along. Personally, I don’t submit doubles to try and give a variety to the winner.

All in all, Brian does a great job at no charge to us. Remember and appreciate that.

  • MDSPHOTO

Suggestions for increasing contest time and advertising for sponsors.

    1. Only 1 cigar per person/per contest- Would decrease chance of winning, but hey people understand the sponsors have to be happy.
    2. Keep at 150 so the humidor will hold the winnings- I don’t know about others, but I would not have room in my humidor to hold another 150 sticks.

Would love to see certain brands excluded. Its pretty obvious that most entries are from sampler packs that the contributor did not like and is now getting rid of them. I am always pleasantly surprised when a Liga or some other upper end stick appears in the updates.

Don’t get me wrong I love wining anything, but if I won I would be looking for ways to get rid of a lot of those cigars.

How about an option for the winner to donate the cigars to the troops.

  • dettigers6

You need to fix the lottery draw.i feel you should put the entries in a closed box then you pick each entry one at a time until the winner is chosen. If I saw my name on top of the list of entries the way you do it now I can’t win unless number 1 is chosen. Just a thought. My cigars or on there way for lottery 17.

    • http://www.cigarobsession.com Bryan Glynn

As I have repeatedly explained to others, you have exactly the same odds at 1 or 75 or anywhere in between. Simple odds.

  • chad1955

Bryan, I’d drop the count to 100 (to match the humidor) and then only have the lotteries going every two months, or one month depending on your ability to secure sponsors on a monthly or twice monthly basis. To make that more manageable change the entry to one entry only (2 cigars). That would help keep the holding count down and keep the odds equal. Entry quality might go up too since adding more cigars of lesser quality doesn’t up the odds for anyone.

If you want to go monthly then perhaps if you worked with the sponsor to deeply discount the humidor (like 60% or more) and have the winner buy it, you might have more support from the sponsors. If someone chose not to buy the deeply discounted humidor, that’s OK, because the sponsor still gets the exposure and the humidor would roll on to next winner….

  • TacticalStogie

Wow! Just saw the video. So excited to win! Will send you my address Brian. Thanks!

  • http://www.parallel-play.com Jay D.

Congrats @TacticalStogie! I was sooo close ahh! Thanks again Bryan, already looking towards the next one.

Regarding the lottery, I’d say bump it up to 200! Also hows about taking a month off from doing the lottery to get things straight with the sponsors or just have sponsors every other month, I would totally buy a humidor to house those babies.

  • PAG

Looking at all the suggestions above, I’d say go with 200 total, 2 cigars per entry, only one entry per person per contest. That would require 100 people to enter as compared to the current system which lands somewhere between 38-75, depending upon how many double entries you tend to receive.
