5 Vegas Gold Maduro Robusto Cigar Review

This 5×50 stick features a very dark coal black thin fragile maduro wrapper with an oily slick firm pack, hand-rolled lumpiness, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, double cap and pungent manure aroma. First light reveals a good draw with plentiful medium bodied smoke output showing flavors of a rich smooth creamy chocolate and tobacco with a deep oily thick long finish. The first third changes slightly dropping the chocolate and producing a rich smooth earth with a metallic-like zing especially through the long oily finish. Hitting the 1/2 way point at 35 minutes, the first half showed no changes. Ending at the hour mark the last third brings back a sweet chocolate mixing with earth with just a minor wonky burn near the end but overall very good construction and rich flavorful smoke. Thank you very much to viewer Justin Hodges for sending this in for review!

I’ve heard that a heavy “barnyard” or “manure” pre light aroma means a good tasting cigar is on the way but I don’t know that I’ve ever heard why that is true. Does is it have something to do with the type of tobacco, soil or growing conditions or is it just an association that is there but no one really knows why? On the face of it, it really doesn’t seem like a good indication of a pleasurable experience :)

Good question! I’m not a blender so I don’t have a particularly scientific answer for you but I simply say it from a lot of personal experience.

I had picked up a handful of these several months back and really loved the flavors. Unfortunately I quickly started to find burn issues with more then just one stick. Really unfortunate.

I too have tried these and have had burn issues with more than one. I had a 5 pack and all 5 were hard to smoke with tunneling and would not stay lit.

Bryan, very nice review of a “diamond in the rough”. The 5 Vegas Gold Maduro line can be fairly inconsistent burn wise, but the deep and complex flavors are always there. I have noticed that the wrappers are dyed; I’m surprised you didn’t comment on that. It doesn’t take away from the smoking experience at all. My favorite vitola is the torpedo, as I’ve found them to have the most consistent burn.

Firstly, I would like to say what a huge fan I am of your Reviews and actually, I have made numerous purchases based on “our” similar cigar tastes. However, in this case I either received a five pack of the worst duds in history or I was in some altered reality.. I am a fan of the 5 Vegas Gold and in fact purchased a couple boxes with great joy and with much enjoyment but I must say these cigars in manduro were the WORST I have ever had. The construction way horrible and (in at least the three I sampled) all had huge tunneling issues with tube like problems.. I wish I could have had the positive experience you did. Keep up the great work.. I will be in your area in May perhaps I will bump into you.. that would be my great pleasure.

Did anyone else notice this was dyed? After smoking this one for a while I noticed my lips were turning black.

I did a video about dye a while ago – it’s not a sure sign of anything, even light Connecticut shades will stain. You have to take the wrapper off and compare the inside and outside for a true tell. It’s pretty rare these days.

Hi Bryan. This review is spot on. Had torpedo couple weeks ago. Flavours were very nice but whole experience ruined burn issues

  • playersrun1

had a hard time keeping this one lit and had to give up on it after a couple re-lights. disappointing.

dug up my full review from my own notes: 5 Vegas Gold Maduro: Densely packed, a few knots felt. Nice dark wrapper and good tobacco smell. Some pepper on the initial draw, but after that just a mild leather and tobacco taste. Had a very hard time keeping this stick lit and burning properly. Light smoke output, and although the draw seemed normal, there was little to no smoke on the exhale. Made a special point to check several times throughout the smoke, but still little to no smoke on the exhale. This was even after exhaling 1-2 times before the draw to get the cherry hot and smoking. Had to re-light a couple times. No change in taste throughout the smoke and then it finally died after about 45 min and I gave up on it. note: seems like many of the above comments had the same experience

  • macko

These seemed to smoke very well no burn issues the 2 that I have had

  • neocigaro

I’ve had a couple of wonky looking burns, don’t know if im doing something wrong or if its normal? not that much of a wonk haha but definitely not razor sharp burns.

  • JJO

I’ve had several of these in the past, and while I enjoyed the sweet flavors and can’t recall any real burn problems, I did have some issues with oozing tar.

  • bbarber

Good review Bryan. Of all the 5 Vegas this is probably my favorite. Still not saying much though.

  • Rob

I dont know how you kept these lit and burning even. I actually really like the flavor of these but cant get them to burn ever.

  • Boucher207

Just picked one up, once its spent a few weeks in my humidor ill break it out and have a taste! Great review!

  • MorganGeo

Puffing on this one tonight. I like the sweet creamy chocolate taste I’m getting. The burn has been a little wonky but no big deal. I love the 5 Vegas gold lines. Always suits my palate.

  • zanlamb

not sure i like the sound of the Metallic taste. Never came across that before

  • Daniel.A

i’ve been wanting to try this stick for a while now. i am a 5 vegas fan.

  • Gamechef

Ditto on the burn issues. It was ok for me on flavor but it was a beast to keep lit was smoking the torpedo a couple of months in the humidor.

  • ratpack007

Bought them on a CI daily deal and i guess for $25 for 10 of them i can not complain but i will save the last five for newbie cigar smokers who might come over

  • Peter Brown

It has a awesome taste, full of flavor and a great smoke. And of course it’s a nice stick with a perfect price. So, this cigar is just amazing.
