Gurkha Special Ops Maduro Churchill Cigar Review

This 7×50 stick offers a dark chocolate, firm, dry satin wrapper with slight tooth, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, a double cap and very rich barnyard aroma. First light reveals a snug draw putting out very good amounts of thick creamy smoke with medium body flavors of a rich smooth aged tobacco and a short clean finish. The first third bring the body up to medium-full with earthy chocolate notes and a good bit of pepper flavor, lasting through the now long finish. The smoke output is excellent, the draw loosened up to perfect. 45 minutes in at the 1/2 way point flavors are up to full body with a deep in the chest earthiness, espresso and dark chocolate notes, dropping the pepper. By the end of the 2nd third the espresso flavor had really taken over, going big and creamy, dropping the earth. The finish also got bolder holding the coffee flavor with a good bit of oily pepper. Ending at 1:30 min the last third brought up the coffee even more, going to a lighter airy smoke. Thank you very much to YouTube viewer Juvethegreat86 for generously sending me this to review!

My opinion: This may be the best gurkha in the line. Such a good stick. I would love to have a churchill size but I cant find them in 5 or 10 packs, only the toro which is equally great. I pick up on a little less coffee with the toro though but it is still there. Great review!

Have you tried the Genghis Kahn? I just received my spec ops from cbid(3 bucks!)So after reading your comment and watching this review I can’t wait to light it up.

Sad to say I have not shared your experience with this cigar nor the brand in general. It seems I always have burn issues with these. For the money I will stick to Saint Luis Rey Titan with never an issue. Thanks for the review!

my first Gurkha was a Beast, and although not my favorite flavors, i didnt really have any burn issues. but based on the # of burn issues ive seen in reviews, im sure they are just another cigar or two around the corner.

    • MaxDuo

The only Gurkha I’ve ever smoked is the worst burning stick I’ve ever had. It was in the same humidor as all the rest of my cigars, which burn perfectly… yet I had to touch it up 4 or 5 times because the burn line was so bad. 2 friends of mine that touch up and relight way too much I recall both smoking a Gurkha, and they had to hit that thing with the lighter probably 10-15 times at least.

This stick sounds delicious though, and maybe someday I’ll give it a chance. I would hope to share Bryan’s burn experience with it, otherwise I’ll probably never touch a Gurkha again!

Is the only way to get one of these is to buy the package that comes with 20 of them, a dry box, and a knife? I would love to buy the set, but just don’t want to drop the $$ on it before I have one of the cigars. Can you buy a single anywhere?

    • david121

yeah there are B&Ms around me that sell these, but if you cant find it locally, just buy it online!

  • playersrun1

looking forward to trying some of these and some of the other Gurkha line-up. just ordered some Ancient Warriors based on some reviews, so i hope those are good too.

  • stevenknisley

I actually ordered a few of these Spec Ops cigars right after I watched this video for the first time and they have not disappointed me yet. Thanks Byran.

ive only smoked one ghurka and it let me down so much that i never bought another one but i might give this one a try thanks bryan for another great review

    • david121

yeah don’t let one bad experience scare you away! Gurkha does have a decent amount of great sticks, including this one!

  • Kace

Im not real big on medium body flavors but surprisingly, this one hit the spot pretty well for me. Nice review.

  • Mobleyjared

    How much are Gurkhas generally?

    • MaxDuo

Like most cigars, it depends. I’m pretty sure most of what I’ve seen at my local B&M was around $6.75-$15 or so.

Groupon also used to run a deal fairly often where you could get 5 Gurkhas for $25, or 5 “more premium” ones for $50.

  • eric.hanson

This review made me pick up a 10 pack of these, it was actually a really great deal I got on them too less than $30 shipped. After having one I agree, great stick.

    • MaxDuo

Wow…. $3/stick after shipping? What in the world was this deal? I was imagining with it being a favorite of Bryan’s, him describing it as having an aged tobacco taste (I just assumed it was aged tobacco at that too, is it not?), and being made by Gurkha that it was probably going to be more around $9+/stick.

    Hi guys,

consider yourselves lucky! down here in New Zealand cigars are very expensive. I just brought 5 Gurkha Grand Reserve churchill’s online and they ended up been around $50 per stick once customs claimed duty! however they would fetch around $80 – $100 per stick in the shops here!

I just hope they are a good smoke!!

    • Gigalo de Vitolas

Man, I feel bad for you. I don’t think any cigar is really worth $50+ cuban or not. I don’t smoke often, 2-3/week but I am a believer in life is too short for bad cigars. Even buying online here in the states with all the discounts available to us I’m still usually paying $7-12/stick on the ones I buy. I can’t imagine paying $50 for a Gurkha.

  • socks

Haven’t try one of these yet, but can’t wait. I have smoked the seduction line which I thought was awesome

  • carvajal_pablo

What a great cigar at a fair price….

  • psehunter

Brian do have any black ops in your humidor that you’ll be reviewing soon?

  • I’m going to look for these. I haven’t had much luck with Gurkhas but this looks like it’s worth trying. Thanks for a great review Brian and keep up the good work!
